Lambourn Good Friday Concert

The augmented choir of St. Michael and All Angels’ Church will give its 29th concert on Good Friday, March 29th, at 7.30pm. This year we are performing works by two composers who died 100 years ago, Fauré and Stanford.

The main work is the Requiem by Gabriel Fauré. He worked on it off and on for many years. The version we know today had its first performance in 1900, although one of the movements had been completed in 1877. Its gentle contemplative style is in marked contrast to that of earlier composers. Most settings since then have followed his lead, and it now seems mandatory to include a serene “Pie Jesu”.

The first (much shorter) half of the concert features the Three Motets by Charles Villiers Stanford, which were probably composed in 1887. Good Friday this year falls on the exact anniversary of his death – March 29th 1924. There will also be organ music by Stanford.

The soloists will be Lucy Fitt and Iain Whittaker. The concert will be conducted by Susan Norman, and Stephen Holmes will be playing the Grade 2 listed Father Willis organ.

There will be a retiring collection in aid of church funds.
