Good Friday Concert

Good Friday Concert

After a gap of two years, the augmented choir of St. Michael and All Angels’ Church will give its 27th concert on Good Friday, April 15th, at 7.30pm. This year we are marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ralph Vaughan Williams with a programme devoted to his music.

The Mass in G minor was written in 1922 and was in part inspired by the pioneering work of Richard Terry at Westminster Cathedral in rediscovering the glories of Tudor church music. It is an unaccompanied work, scored for two choirs and four soloists. Our soloists will be Tamsin Slatter, Sylvia Ardron, Adrian Neal and Iain Whittaker.

The Three Preludes on Welsh Hymn Tunes for organ were written in 1920. Vaughan Williams as editor included the tunes in the first version of the English Hymnal which appeared in 1908.

The concert will be conducted by Susan Holmes, and Stephen Holmes will be playing the Father Willis organ.

There will be a retiring collection in aid of church funds.
