Thoughts from The Vicarage with the sea, Ascot and cream
Greetings this morning! Ladies Day at Ascot – not that either of us are at Ascot this week but the milliners here is full of fabulous hats reminding us of our links with the racing world. Best wishes to all the teams setting off today.
Congratulations especially to our own Nicky Henderson (usually National Hunt racing) who won the Ascot Stakes with Ahorsewithnoname! And yes, that’s not a spelling mistake!
Looking towards Sunday all are welcome to join us in either St Michael’s 10.30 or All Saints 9.00 this week. All Saints now has a beautiful embossed Gospel book which will be used at each service. It’s carried out to the people symbolising the Gospel being amongst and for the people. Come and see it in action on Sunday morning.
St Michael’s also has some new books which may be of interest to those who pop into church during the week. Let me know what you think 🙂
Cream Teas Monday August 28th St Michael’s Lambourn
We are very much looking forward to this annual event being well and truly back to its former glory!
To be able to continue this great village tradition we are asking for volunteers to;
- make some scones
- be a waiter or waitress
- be a cashier
- help put out tables and chairs
- lay tables
- help put away tables and chairs
- offer some raffle prizes
- donate some ingredients …
- wash up
Please consider joining our team – which, at the moment is me leading the team of myself!!! Please drop me a text, email or message me to let me know if you would like to join my team. I cannot do this all on my own!
Sadly, but for the best of reasons Keith will not be around. Mr Vicarage, aka the butler and gardener will be out of action as his long awaited urgent operation is programmed in for August 21st.
On a more serious note this last week I’ve been thinking of the sea. More specifically of firstly, the migrant boat Messenia which sank with an estimated 500 souls on board and then the submersible Ocean Gate with 5 souls on board. We are praying, and please join me, as I write for all involved in either of these tragedies. But I cannot help but ask how long and at what volume did the press coverage, the interviews and ‘news’ last in each case? Each soul, be they lost or not, is precious in the sight of God … and I wonder at the disparity in the time given over to the fate or otherwise of each vessel and how it reflects upon our world. Prayers for them all.
And finally, as we pray for those in need, and as man’s inhumanity to man rages on in the Ukraine and in South Sudan the Collect I will be using this Sunday may be helpful;
God our saviour,
look on this wounded world
in pity and in power;
hold us fast to your promises of peace
won for us by your Son,
our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen
With prayerful best wishes for you and yours
God bless
Julie
