Thoughts from The Vicarage with Eco film Saturday, warm Lambourn and All Souls
Greetings on this Autumnal afternoon! Please find attached Pews News looking ahead to the feast of St Luke on Sunday.
Believed to be the author of the gospel which stands in his name and also the Acts of the Apostles, tradition identifies Luke as the physician whom Paul loved. Sunday’s epistle gives us a touching glimpse of that friendship. Paul faces danger and loneliness, others have gone elsewhere while Luke stayed alongside him ….. presence can itself be a kind of medicine and I’ll be reflecting upon that at each of our three services on Sunday.
But first comes SATURDAY – Eco film Saturday! Finding Harmony: A Kings Vision to reunite humanity with Nature. St Michael’s is screening this 2026 film thanks to Doug who writes; ‘come along and enjoy this film in Church – warm with cushioned pews or chairs and a large screen. We invite you to join us for a fun social evening. Bring a sharing plate and a bottle! 7pm film begins – no adverts!!! (Approx finish time 21:15)
The Empty Chair in St Michael’s When someone we love dies they leave a gap in our lives. We miss them. Is there someone that you miss? If you’d like, write the name of the person onto one of the labels and attach it to the chair. Say a quiet thank you for the good memories that you have of them. If you want, share your sad feelings with God – tell Him how you feel; take your time. We will collect the names and pray at Morning Prayer each day that you will find strength and comfort and that your loved one may rest in peace. It may be helpful to talk to someone. If so, please do contact myself or Christine.
The Benefice All Souls’ service is on Saturday October 31st 3.00 pm in St Michael’s. We will remember by name and by lighting of candles of all those we have loved yet see no more. A quiet and peaceful service with refreshments. If you would like a loved one’s name read out please simply add them to the list by the Empty Chair. All, and we mean all, are welcome.
Warm Lambourn is back! All welcome to join Fran, chorister at St Michaels’. She writes ‘We’re having our first craft session of the season at 10am on Saturday 24 October in St Michael’s. We’ll be joining forces with the fantastic WI to put together lots of warm things for our community – come and join us, no matter how experienced a crafter you are. Dust off your knitting needles or crochet hooks and come along for a couple of hours of cosy craft and chat. Hot drinks will be provided with a nibble as well!
Christmas Fair please remember to book a stall for Dec. 4th when we will be getting into the Christmas spirit. Stall holders confirm please to Donni, Amanda or myself. Many thanks.
Looking ahead to Advent Our thoughts and conversations will be based upon ‘Women of The Nativity – An Advent & Christmas journey in nine stories’ by Paula Gooder. Contact Christine or Julie if you would like a copy.
Finally,
Loving God,we pray
for all who are weak, fearful and vulnerable in our world today;
for all who are oppressed and treated with contempt and injustice.
We pray that the leaders of the nations lead with
your wisdom, your justice and your mercy
and that peace may prevail on earth.
Amen
With every blessing,
Julie
