Thoughts from The Vicarage with D Day beacons and prayer
Greetings on the feast of Corpus Christi – the day of thanksgiving for the institution of Holy Communion. It’s a day to focus on the holy meal shared by Christians in all denominations variously called the Lord’s Supper, Holy Communion, Eucharist, the Mass. And as we read in Paul’s letter to the people of Corinth. The sacrament as in all sacraments is an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace.
Please find attached Pews News & read on for dates and news.
On Thursday, June 6 the nation will come together to remember the tens of thousands of allied forces who gave service on D-DAY eighty years ago and helped secure the peace we in the UK enjoy today. St Michael & All Angels church will be open all day with a Remembrance Book to sign and tribute. At 6pm a short service will be held in St Michael’s to mark the 80th anniversary of D Day. All are welcome and we have kept it early in order that families with younger children may come along! Later in the evening the bells will peal – please watch out on social media for precise timing. Later that evening of June 6th, Lambourn Parish Council invites you to attend the lighting of the Lambourn D-Day Beacon at Seven Barrows, generously arranged and hosted by Nicky Henderson.
09:00 PM – Reading of the Tribute by Rev Julie Mintern
09:15 PM – Lighting of the Beacon
09:30 PM – Fireworks

Thank you to Karen Sperrey and James Pryer of East Garston for their most enjoyable illustrated talk on “The Restoration of Church Cottage – The how and why”. And very best wishes to all those keen competitors at the East Garston Tennis Tournament on Sunday 9th June. Thank you to all those participating and hosting both events in aid of The Tower Appeal.
And finally, as we say farewell to Bruce and Eileen Laurie. Bruce has held the office of Churchwarden for about a quarter of a century and I am hoping that we will be able to present them with a gift to mark their time here. If you wish to donate to such a gift please pass it to the Treasurer Ian Courtney, place it in an envelope and give it to myself or pay directly via direct debit with reference: “BL gift”.

And very finally a prayer from the office of Compline
Before the ending of the day,
Creator of the world, we pray
That you, with steadfast love, would keep
Your watch around us while we sleep.
From evil dreams defend our sight,
From fears and terrors of the night;
Tread underfoot our deadly foe
That we no sinful thought may know.
O Father, that we ask be done
Through Jesus Christ, your only Son;
And Holy Spirit, by whose breath
Our souls are raised to life from death.
God bless
Julie
