Thoughts from The Vicarage with Pews News

Greetings as incoming serious weather is being forecast. We are in the season of Epiphany and will be celebrating the Baptism of Christ this Sunday. I look forward to greeting you on Sunday!

The season of joyful celebration that began at Christmas now continues through to the Feast of the Presentation known as Candlemas. That’s the service when the child whom the magi visited at his birth is recognized by Simeon and Anna, when he comes to be presented in the Temple according to the Law of Israel. He is both ‘a light to lighten the Gentiles’ and ‘the glory of God’s people Israel’.

It was super to welcome so many friends and families over the holidays to services throughout the Valley! Really enjoyed all the conversations and reuniting with one another. A number of you were interested in confirmation, a christening for your child or would like a church wedding. Please do either ring or email me – I look forward to hearing from you!

Looking ahead towards Lent ….. What is Come and See? Each Lent, Bishop Stephen delves into a new aspect of Christian faith – this year we’re looking at the Eucharist – or Holy Communion. It’s perfect for new and old Christians alike, and can be done on your own, as a family, as a church, school or in a small group. Explore the profound meal at the heart of Christian life – whether you’re new to Christianity or have been coming to church for years. For more details Come and See – Diocese of Oxford

How does it work? There will be weekly sessions through Lent at The Vicarage – times and days to be arranged, all ages welcome. If you would prefer to explore on your own you can do so as Come and See is a free online experience. It invites you to explore spirituality and find out more about the Christian faith. Sign up https://2cm.es/1mts1 to get daily emails through Lent, with reflections, readings and encouragements.

Following the announcement of Bishop Stephen’s retirement we are all invited to share views on our new bishop of Oxford. The consultation period is now open – anyone living, working or worshipping in the diocese can contribute their views via an online form, before Wednesday 4 February at 5pm. Do let your voice be heard and click on the link!

And finally a prayer Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on your Church and illuminate our path as we seek a new Bishop. Help us to work together for the good of your kingdom and all who live, work and study in the Diocese of Oxford. Give wisdom and listening hearts to those who have influence. Send out your Holy Spirit to call one who will faithfully teach, pastor, care for and equip us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
God bless
Julie
