Thoughts from The Vicarage 325

Greetings to you and yours on this gloriously sunny day on the eve of May. The month in which the earth springs into bloom and we start thinking about planting gardens, family picnics, spring cleaning and plans for trips out and even holidays. In the Catholic tradition May is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is a spiritual highlight, an opportunity for the faithful to deepen their connection with Mary the mother of God.

In Ancient Rome, May was dedicated to Flora, the goddess of blossoms. They celebrated ludi florals, or floral games, at the end of April and asked the intercession of Flora for all that blooms. In France today – Lily of the Valley is still used and given widely on May 1st by those celebrating the month of May

Have you thought you might like to take a greater part in worship? Perhaps read a lesson, be a welcomer, lead our prayers, help out with clearing and putting away after each service, help at the altar or learn more about being a verger? Wendy Holmes and myself are keen to know if you would like to join in. Please let either of us know if you are interested and if you have a query please do ask.

Come and See Weekend for Religious Life Enquirers Sat 11th – Sun 12th July 2026

The Sisters of the Community of St Mary the Virgin in Wantage (OX12 9AU) are offering those wondering about a possible vocation to the Religious Life a chance to spend a weekend with them in their Convent joining them in chapel, eating with them, and more. There will also be opportunity to chat with the Sisters and ask questions. Further info can be found here: https://csmv.co.uk/community-life/vocation-events/ or on the attached poster.

God With US Novena Ascension and Pentecost are 9 days apart. Since the very beginning of the church, those nine days, the Novena, have been a time of prayer. Not just Prayer as individuals but as a community, like those first members of the church. Archbishop Sarah has written a beautiful booklet for us to follow through the nine days ending on Pentecost. Each day contains a short passage, a thought for the day and a prayer. If you would like one of these booklets, please do let me know.

Sublime to the ridiculous St Michael & All Angels folk – please look and see if you have, by accident pocketed the church toilet key. Thank you.

And finally:

Jesus says “Do not let your hearts be troubled.”

Let us pray that this may be so,
not because there is nothing to fear
but because in you, there is something greater to trust.
May that be of comfort in a world in which so many feel anxious, uncertain and excluded.
May we become people and communities where others can find space, welcome, and dignity.
Amen

Every blessing

Julie
