Village Views January 2016

All Saints Church – article in January 2016 Village Views.

I reported last month on the Remembrance Service which took place on Saturday 7th November, partly in church due to the rain and partly around the war memorial. We have received many comments concerning how much people appreciated having the Wantage Youth Brass once again to provide the music, the Last Post and the Reveille. Many also said how wonderful they sounded in church and how nice it was when they lead the procession to the war memorial for the laying of wreaths and final prayers. Next year we will consider changing our previous Order of Service to incorporate this format.

It was a last minute decision to move to the church for the main part of the service as it would not have been possible for the band to play in the heavy rain. Sorry to any that arrived later and missed the guidance regarding the change of venue!! I am also sorry to keep mentioning funding but there is a fee involved which is used to support the band. Thanks to the support from those that made contributions following the event but it was not sufficient and so we did have to dig into the general church fund to make up the shortfall. We plan to book the band again for next year but we will need your support once again to meet the costs. Thanks to the Queens Arms for providing coffee and biscuits after the event.

A report of the occasion was written incorporating some photographs taken by Martyn Wright. This was placed on the church page of the East Garston website and can now be found in the archive at:

It can also be found on the Benefice website at:

The church is very grateful to East Garston Parish Council for the award of a £500 grant under the Grants for the Community scheme towards the cost of purchase of gravel for the access drive to the church. Thanks once again to the team of hard-working “volunteers” who helped to spread the gravel over the drive in time for the Christmas services.

The PCC and I wish all readers of Village Views peace and happiness as we celebrate the joyous occasion of the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.
