St. James the Greater, Eastbury
Candlemas, January 31st 2016
The Taizé style of service places emphasis on silence, light and the meditative weaving together of prayer and music. It was founded by Brother Roger Schutz in a monastic community in the village of Taizé, about five miles north of Cluny on a bleak Burgundy hillside. Brother Roger first started the community in 1940 as a sanctuary for wartime refugees, taking monastic vows in 1949 and within years Taizé drew millions of pilgrims, particularly young people, to its worship, hospitality and teaching. The community is dedicated to Christian unity and one of its successes is that all kinds of churches now share this same style of worship from various denominations. Everything in the service is designed to encourage meditation, the church is lit softly with candles and lanterns and people can join the choir in the singing of chants if they wish.
